BHAI KANHAIYA JI
(1648AD. - 1718AD. )

Year 1648 AD. in the vicinity of Wazirabad was situated a populous townlet known Sohdara on the banks of river Chader Bhaga . It was an auspicious night when a heavenly soul descended and child named Kanhaiya was born. The foretellers on consultation by his father Bhai Nathu Ram Khatri ,a well to do Kshtriya from Badhavan Clan, prophesised that the child would be gnostic and would cast off all worldy attachments.

As a child Bhai Kanhaiya Ji was educated and brought up in an aristocatic Kshatriya families but he remained unattached from household life and was absorbed in the quest of the spiritual knowledge . He occasionally, absented lf from home during nights and spent most of his time in the service of the divine people . He would tell his father " Dear Father! there are in a family sons wise as well as unwise, I an one who is insane, so please take me as such and be contented. However he had an indulgent father with cooperative spirit which coincided with him pleasantly. Bhai Kanhaiya ji dedicated his life in the service of the Most High.

Bhai Kanhaiya Ji had just stepped in his teen that he fortuitously, came in contact with a Saint Nanua. Nanua Ji ,an eminent gnostic and heavenly minded man,was a small structured man ( like a dwarf) with a short hump in his spine. Bhakat Nanua Ji was blessed by Sri Guru Teg Bahadur Ji and the former would invite Nanua Ji to play game of dice almost every day. In his company Bhai Kanhaiya Ji learnt a great deal about Divine love with God.

After the demise of Bhakat Nanua Ji he rejoined his family. Soon after Bhai Kanhaiya's return from his reclusion, his father also left for heavenly abode. Being the eldest son he became the heir to attain the duties of his father, against his wishes he reluctantly accepted them. The muslim ruler, under whose administration his father was working for routine administrative purposes used to go to Kabul. That year Bhai Kanhaiya Ji , at the place of his father, accompanied him with his staff. One night during the journey he heard he heard charmingly chants of slokas of ninth Guru Tegh Bahadur, ninth incarnation of Sri Guru Nanak Sahib. It is under the deep influence of these slokas that he cast off all his mammonish tangles and mysteriously, slipped away from there in to deep jungles.

Bhai Kanhaiya, in his ardent passion and affinity for God, wandered in forest, writhing in the pangs of separation he had to fast for many days. In the forest he came across a self less & self-possessed saint. The saint adviced Bhai Ji needed guidance of a true saint who had illumined his mind by merging himself in the Supreme Source of light. Such a gnostic person could only be found in populous towns ,as you find particles of gold in the ash taken from goldsmith's furnace. If one throws away the ash, he throws the particles of gold with it. The advice of the sublimated soul had a deep impact on Bhai Kanhaiya Ji and he paid frequent visits to the towns thereafter.

Once he was passing through a town when he came across a saint addressing a large congregation. The magical effect of his oration made his join the congergation. During the discourse he saw an empty pitcher lying by his side. He picked that up ,filled it at the river nearby and placed it by his side. The Saint lifted that pitcher drank some water, washed his face & hands , spilled the remaining water and placed the pitcher by his side . Bhai Kanhaiya lost no time in refilling the empty pitcher and placed by his side. The saint acted as before, the whole practice of Saint spilling the water and Bhai Ji refilling it went on for nearly three months. The saint was ,ultimately, pleased by the selfless service of Bhai Kanhiya . He asked him to express his passionate desire
