( 1688 AD. - 1757 AD. )

A POTRAIT OF
BHAI ADDAN SHAH JI
IS AWAITED.

Bhai Addan Shah was born in 1688AD. As a child he was sent to Baba Gurdas Ji (Udasin Samprada) to learn and acquire knowledge of Gurmukhi at Jhang (now in Pakistan) near village Lau. There he mastered the art of chanting and hearkening of the Divine Laudations Gurbani Kirtan. His parents, unlike any other parents, wanted their son to marry and settle. However he remained indifferent to all worldly affairs .

He was a Gnostic and heavenly minded man from the very early days of his life. It was his eternal desire to serve the lord thus he moved to a Dharamshala. He became popular for "Pangat " and "Sangat ". Once upon at time, for "Pangat" he received cows as offerings from the sikhs and some thieves took away those cows leaving their calves behind. Looking at the state of calves without their mothers Bhai Addan Shah took the calves and left them with the thieves. He said " When you too will flutter in love sickness of God and endure the unbearable pangs of separation, only then would you experience the pain of separation. Please keep the calves close to their mothers and cherish their happiness.

He left for his missionary tour with his nearly 250 disciples. He assigned Bhai Bhalla Ram Ji the responsibility of managing the Dharamshala (Tikana). They travelled to Jammu where he preached about indiscrimanation of caste and creed. Economically weaker people were badly exploited by the rich when Bhai Addan Shah proclaimed about equality of all human beings. Bhai Addan Shah moved on to Kartarpur where he made his Dharamshala in 1754 (Samvat Vikrami).

On 17 th of Visakh 1757 he was called by the most high and he breath last. His dharamshala had nearly 250 disciples who moved to different parts of the country in the service of mankind .
